Maximize Your Space with a Custom Closet

At C & C Cabinets, we believe everything you do should speak to authentically creating the life you just can’t wait to wake up to.

Today, closets are more than simply a place to store clothes, they often do double duty as a dressing room or sitting room, so they must be beautiful, and functional.

Here are a few ways that you can improve the function of your closet, regardless of its size and how you use it!

Before we get started, ask yourself:

  • Do you want a place to sit?
  • Do you want to be able to look at yourself before leaving for the day in a mirror?
  • Do you want to watch TV or listen to music while you get dressed?
  • Do you want there to be windows that you can look out of?

Ideas for a Custom Closet

Stretching Your Reach: Using the Vertical Dimension to Your Advantage

When designing a custom closet, take advantage of all available space—from the floor to the ceiling.

Incorporate bins on high shelves and even a third clothing pole if your ceiling will allow it. These areas allow you to store items that you do not use all the time.

If you have enough room in your closet use the less accessible places for shoes, hats, bags, or sentimental items.

Consider Lighting

Proper lighting can make or break your custom closet. While natural light from skylights or windows is great, sunlight can fade your clothing, yikes! If sunlight is not an option, you need to have artificial light that makes you look and feel good.

Know Your Wardrobe

Consider how you use your clothing.

Do you need drawers for folded shirts? Or do you hang them up on hangers?

Do you prefer to see your clothes on display, or are doors better suited for your dream custom closet?

Design your closet to serve you. Think about what you wear and how you live to get dressed. Most-used items should be at eye level.

Often closets have too much hanging storage and not enough shelf or drawer storage, make sure to incorporate shelves and drawers into your custom closet too.

Consider the Floor

While you may be the only one who sees it, the floor in your closet matters. For warmth, carpet is best. But for maximum cleanability, go with wood or vinyl and add a pretty rug.

Consider the Essentials

Yes, clothes are essential in your closet but so are things like lighting…Our custom closet designers can help you plan where light switches, vents, and access panels should go in your custom closet. Perhaps you could save space by installing the light switch outside of the closet.

If your master closet doubles as a dressing room, you may want to include electrical outlets in case you want to charge devices or have a place to plug in hair care items in the closet.

Pair an Island with Your Walk-In Closet

Islands are not just for your kitchen. Islands can be custom-made to fit your walk-in closet and can serve many purposes. On the flat surface, you can set out tomorrow’s outfit, or fold clothing. The Cabinet Chic can also install drawers to store your jewelry, watches, and lingerie. With cubbies underneath, you could store your shoe collection. And if you add a pull-out ironing board, you will have the ultimate multi-functional space!

If you want to dramatically increase the functionality and storage capabilities of your walk-in closet, an island is a perfect way to do that.

At C & C Cabinets, we can build a custom island that is crafted with drawers, shoe storage, cubbies, hanging options, and more!

Incorporate a Bench

A bench is an excellent alternative to an island and can give your closet that extra edge it needs. Not only does it add functionality, but it also enhances the overall aesthetic appeal of your space. A well-placed bench can offer comfortable seating while you put on shoes or browse through clothes in the morning.

Also, a bench can be beneficial for people with mobility issues. Having a place to sit and get dressed in or near the closet is much more convenient than putting them on elsewhere. If this is your ‘forever home’ then think about how the design may work as you age.
