Minimalist Interior Design 101

It’s impossible to deny the serenity and simplicity that a minimalist interior offers. While most people are familiar with the concept of minimalism, it is much more than just getting rid of the clutter, it focuses on the shape, color, and texture of just a handful of essential pieces and elements. Want to try the minimalist design aesthetic in your home? The Cabinet Chic tells how to make a minimal interior unique to your space!

What is Minimalist Interior Design?

Essentially, minimalist design involves using the bare essentials to create a simple, sophisticated, and uncluttered space. While it is characterized by simple clean lines and a monochromatic color palette, minimalism can fit any design aesthetic from rustic to modern. Generally, with a minimalist interior design aesthetic you will find:

  • An open floor plan and a ton of light
  • Well-built functional furniture
  • Focus on shape, color, and texture
  • Minimal amount of artwork or accents
We believe that we don’t need so many things. You can live in any space with a lot less. The things we do have just need to fit our lifestyle and function exactly how we need them to.

Less is More

If minimalist design had a manifesto, it would be “less is more.”  Achieving this look is more deliberate and can even be difficult to pull off because it is more than just decluttering and choosing a few furniture pieces against a white backdrop. Doing so could leave your space feeling cold, sparse, and un-lived in. The biggest challenge of minimalist interior design is to make the space look warm and inviting.

A monochromatic color palette can be enhanced and “warmed up” by combining different shades, tints, and textures to create a dynamic atmosphere; instead of a space that feels sterile. Texture can be a great way to add warmth to a minimal space. Look for soft wool fabrics, linen wallpapers, and textural rugs for the floor. These different textures will complement each other and create a soothing and inviting atmosphere.

Keeping with the theme of less is more, the Cabinet Chic can design beautiful built-in cabinets, custom walk-in-closets, or kitchen cabinetry to enhance the minimalist design. Contact C & C Cabinets for a design consultation!

Elements of Minimal Design

Bare Essentials Usually, a minimalist space will have an open floor plan to create a sense of freedom and relaxation. There should be no excessive artwork on the walls or decorations, and the few details that are incorporated into the space should blend into the setting. This could be a single beautiful piece of artwork on the living room wall or a simple vase with flowers on the dining room table.\

Clean Lines

Minimalism focuses on functionality and practicality. Flat smooth surfaces with clean lines are emphasized and create a bold statement. You won’t find many patterned furnishings and accessories in the minimal home, instead, the focus will be on simple colors, shapes, and forms.

Function and practicality are essential to creating a minimalist home.

Monochromatic Color Palette  While you might see whites, beiges, and grays in a minimalist-designed space, don’t be afraid to incorporate darker colors like deep navy blue, black, or deep greens into your home. Even small accents of aquas, soft yellows, and other colors can be incorporated into a minimalist design.

Adding Warmth to a Minimalist Design

Try these design tips to add some warmth to your space:

  • Incorporate drapery, bedding, cushions, and area rugs in varying textiles such as linen, wool, and cotton.
  • Use texture on the walls such as linen wallpaper.
  • Add soft wool fabrics and rugs in the bedroom.
  • In a bathroom, textural tile patterns can add visual interest.
  • Natural and wooden accessories can soften stark white or concrete elements.

The Minimalist Kitchen

Minimalism, though simple, should be functional for the entire family. Full height upper cabinets, floor-to-ceiling pantries, and under-the-counter island storage spaces can increase storage capacity in your minimalist kitchen. Plus, you can hide away anything that doesn’t fit into the simplicity of the room, and maintain the clean feel of the space. In a minimalist space, the cabinetry should be a beautiful accent that enhances the space, not a distraction.
